| THE CURRENT FPTP SYSTEM |
Currently, members of the Lok Sabha are elected
via a First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system. This means that for
a given constituency, the candidate who receives the most
number of votes in the constituency will win the seat. Each
constituency is represented in the Lok Sabha by a single member.
|
Example
|
|
Let's say that 1 lakh people vote in a constituency,
which has 3 candidates standing for elections. Candidate A
secures 40,000 votes. Candidate B secures 39,000 votes. Candidate
C secures 21, 000 votes.
|
|
Under the FPTP system, candidate A would
win the seat, despite the fact that a good majority of people
(60,000) did not vote for candidate A.
